Welcome to Charleston, South Carolina

Welcome to Charleston from Chris DeLoach

Charleston is among the most interesting and sought after places to live in the world. What makes Charleston so unique is an extensive list of incredible attributes including friendly people, a beautiful setting, world-class arts and entertainment, low-cost of living, low unemployment with plenty of new job growth, great beaches, the South's best restaurants, and generally a fine quality of living that exceeds what is available almost anywhere else.

Charleston is located on the eastern seaboard of South Carolina approximately half way between Savannah Georgia and the lower edge of North Carolina. Charleston is a harbor town developed around a beautiful,  wide harbor so extremely important in the colonial era that forts were built to protect it's entrance - including famous Fort Sumter, upon which were fired the first shots of the Civil War. The Charleston Harbor is still very important and is one of the primary employers through the state port system - the third busiest cargo port on the eastern seaboard of the US. In addition the Charleston Harbor serves as amazing recreation venue for every sort of water sport known to man.

The historic Peninsula of Charleston, the area most familiar to visitors, is a relatively small piece of land in comparison to the entire greater Charleston region. It is where you will find the majority of the antebellum homes and is the centerpiece for the entire region. The historic district offers history unrivaled by most world-class cities. Take a short horse drawn carriage with a trained guide through the city and you are sure to learn more about the South and about Charleston than you will in any semester long history class.

The city is a living, breathing museum. But, Charleston has undergone a consistent series of changes since its beginning. The Peninsula itself was once little more than a series of high land areas surrounded by countless streams, ponds, and marshes. Many of the streets today were once water-filled low-lying areas. The landscape was reshaped over hundreds of years of human endeavor, resulting in a peninsula with usable land area approximately twice its original size.

Charleston has many beautiful homes available for tours. Some of these home tours are available only during certain times of the year but are always worth the effort. Homes along "The Battery" are particularly amazing. Take some time to walk through some of the many churches downtown as well which are each distinct time capsules - many of which played their parts in history, hosting several of the Founding Fathers for Sunday services, including George Washington.

The downtown area is also the primary destination if you're interested in enjoying one of the best restaurants in the United States. Charleston is known as a culinary capital of the South for good reason.

If arts and entertainment are what you are looking, discovering Charleston is like discovering the mother load. Charleston is an extremely active arts community. Recent years have also seen a powerful resurgence of the local jazz scene, a genre strongly connected with Charleston. Charleston also hosts the largest arts festival in the southeast and many feel it may be the premier performing arts Festival in the United States - Spoleto.

Downtown historic Charleston is just a small piece of the greater Charleston area which includes three large counties, where you will find approximately 90% of the area's population. Surrounding Charleston are vibrant communities including Mount Pleasant, just over the Ravenel Bridge from downtown Charleston, Summerville, West Ashley, Goose Creek, Moncks Corner, Hannahan, Ravenel, the Isle of Palms, Sullivans Island, Folly Beach, Kiawah Island, Johns Island, James Island, Daniel Island, and more.

Regardless of what you are looking for, Charleston is sure to satisfy!

I developed a simple blog to host photos I take of the Charleston area. It also serves as a springboard into my primary website which I encourage you to visit.
